When GPS apps first came out, they were… let’s just say, a little unreliable. I would have stopped using them, except every time I tried, they somehow led me back home by a completely different route, and I couldn’t remember exactly how I got there! “At the next exit, turn right and meander through the bad part of town. In half a mile, turn left where your hubcaps will be stolen. When possible, turn around ten times and try to pin the tail on the donkey.” It was enough to make anyone pull over and cry.
At the time we had just moved into a new development, and right away I realized our house lived in the black hole of early GPS mapping. FedEx called me: “Um… I think I see your house…maybe 300 yards away…there’s a chain link fence. Can I toss the package over?” I said, “Sure, and while you’re at it, climb the fence so I can sign for it.”
And don’t get me started on when the GPS would tease you like a schoolyard bully: “Proceed to the highlighted route, and your guidance will start.” But I can’t get to the highlighted route! “Proceed to the highlighted route, and your guidance will start.” Yeah, I heard you the first dozen times! After a half a tank of gas, I get all frustrated and push the little button on the phone till it beeps and ask, “How do I get to the highlighted route?” GPS responds:“I have found 12 hair salons that can highlight your roots. Would you like to go there?”
Sound familiar? Life often feels a lot like that…twists, dead ends, confusing instructions, and a little voice nagging you when you think you’re going the right way. We try to figure it out ourselves, and sometimes we spin in circles.
But God’s guidance is nothing like a glitchy early GPS. Psalm 32:8 says:
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.”
Unlike the app, God’s directions are perfect, precise, and loving. He doesn’t tease you or get distracted. He sees the path you need, even when you can’t. The trick is to follow the highlighted route He gives: His Word, His Spirit, His wisdom. And trust that He will get you where you need to go.
Next time life’s directions feel confusing, remember: God isn’t a glitchy GPS. He’s the loving Guide who already knows the road and is ready to lead you safely home.
