“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5–6 )
Malcolm Gladwell’s book Blink explores the power of snap judgments…decisions made in a fraction of a second that can sometimes be brilliant, and other times disastrous. He tells of tennis coaches who can predict a double fault before the racket even hits the ball, psychologists who can tell if a marriage will last after a few minutes of watching a couple, and antiquities experts who can spot a fake at a glance.
Our brains are incredible, and instinct is powerful. But it does have limits. Although coaches or experts can do it with a high success rate, we can’t rely on our intuition alone when it comes to life’s most important decisions. That’s why God calls us to trust Him. Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us to lean not on our own understanding, but to submit every choice to Him.
Our human intuition is limited; our perspective is narrow. Yet when we pause, pray, and seek His guidance, even decisions that seem instantaneous can be guided by divine insight.
Think of it this way: God gives us the ability to “see” what others might miss—not because we’re smarter, but because we are attuned to His Spirit. We can trust Him, confident that He knows what we cannot.
Next time you face a decision—big or small—pause, breathe, and ask God to guide your heart. Let your “blink” be informed by Him, and watch how your path becomes straight.
