Jumping Up and Down

“The word aerobics came about when the gym instructors got together and said:
‘If we’re going to charge $10 an hour, we can’t call it jumping up and down.’
– Rita Rudner

Let’s be honest—exercise sounds great… in theory. But once the soreness sets in, the machines confuse us, or we realize we’re paying money to jump up and down—we’re out.

Some of us go all-in and burn out. Others lose motivation when we don’t see quick results.
And then there’s the guy who does go to the gym 6 days a week, but…

“I still weigh 240 pounds.”
“What do you do there?”
“I deliver the mail. I’m a mailman!”

Consistency without intention doesn’t lead to transformation.
And here’s the twist: the same is true in our spiritual lives.

We might show up to church, have a Bible on the shelf, or say we believe—but without spiritual intention (prayer, surrender, obedience), we risk going through the motions and wondering why nothing changes.

Paul writes:

“Train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things…”
– 1 Timothy 4:7-8 (NIV)

Spiritual growth, like fitness, takes practice and patience. But unlike the gym, grace meets us every time we show up. Even the smallest reps—like reading one verse or whispering a prayer—build strength over time.

What’s one “spiritual rep” you can do today?

  • Thank God for something small
  • Pray before you scroll
  • Read one Psalm

Keep showing up. Grace is already at work.

With faith,
