The J. Paul Getty Museum in California once acquired a striking statue called the “Getty Kouros”. At first, many experts were convinced it was an authentic ancient work. But some immediately sensed something was off. George Despinis, head of the Acropolis Museum, said, “Anyone who has ever seen a sculpture coming out of the ground could tell that that thing has never been in the ground.”
Over time, letters and documentation supposedly proving the statue’s history were revealed as forgeries, and yet even today, experts aren’t fully certain whether the kouros is authentic. Some anomalies may simply reflect gaps in knowledge—but one thing was clear: the experts’ instincts were often right before their analysis caught up.
Our spiritual lives work in much the same way. God often gives us insight and intuition—a quiet warning, a sense of peace, or a tug on our heart. Sometimes we wait for all the facts before acting, but Scripture reminds us to trust the Spirit’s guidance:
“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’”~ Isaiah 30:21 (NIV)
Like the experts who recognized truth before the full evidence appeared, we are called to listen to the Spirit in those subtle, almost instantaneous moments. Not every intuition is perfect, but when paired with prayer, Scripture, and godly counsel, it’s a powerful tool for discernment.
The next time something feels off, or God gently nudges you in a certain direction, don’t ignore it. That tugging may be the Spirit guiding you.
