Digging For Wisdom

“If you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.” – Proverbs 2:4-5

When I was in college, I took my study Bible on a weekend trip. When I returned to the dorm, I couldn’t find it anywhere. Panic set in—it was full of notes from my theology classes and personal study. I even asked the driver if he had seen it, and I would have paid a fortune to get it back.

Three months later, I happened to be in a parking lot talking with friends. The driver had his trunk open, and there, buried under a pile of junk, I spotted the corner of my Bible. I lunged forward, unburied it, and rejoiced like the woman who found her lost coin (Luke 15:9). I asked him, “I thought you said you looked for my Bible?” He shrugged, “Uh, I did.”

That experience taught me something important about wisdom. Our author in Proverbs says we should pursue wisdom as earnestly as I searched for my Bible. James 1:5–8 tells us to ask God for wisdom. But prayer alone is not enough. Just as we pray for daily bread and then work to earn it, we must pray for wisdom and diligently seek it in God’s Word.

Like a gold miner digging deep in California, we must slow down, meditate on Scripture, and use the tools God has given us—concordances, commentaries, and careful study. Wisdom requires single-minded pursuit. The double-minded person who claims to want wisdom but does not seek it wholeheartedly will receive nothing, but the one who pursues it with all their heart will be abundantly blessed.

Don’t just ask God for wisdom today—go after it with all your heart. Dig deep into His Word. The treasure is worth the effort.
