It has been said that one man’s treasure is another man’s trash. As long as men remain the ultimate authority on which is treasure and trash, disagreements will continue. However, there is one who never overlooks anything of value. Too bad this cannot be said of us. We tend to reject the most valuable things in life.
Michelangelo, one of the most important artists of the Italian Renaissance, was a masterful sculptor and painter. One of his most famous works stands in Florence Italy. Nearly 18 feet of finely crafted stone bring to life the colossal figure of David. This incredible carving has been viewed by millions and is truly a masterpiece. Ironically though, the huge marble stone from which Michelangelo chiseled the young king was first rejected by other great artists. The great sculptor Agostino abandoned the project almost immediately. Later, Duccio, and Rossellino, also rejected the project saying the marble was of poor quality. Modern scientific analysis has confirmed the marble is a rather mediocre slab.
But Michelangelo said, “I saw the angel in the marble and I carved until I set him free.”
A stone of much greater significance was, and is, rejected by many. But it is this stone from which we all find ultimate beauty and worth. Paul reminds us, “Jesus is the stone the builders rejected which has become the cornerstone; Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:11-12
Won’t you make Jesus the cornerstone of your life? Make this the day, the stone, rejected by so many others, becomes YOUR cornerstone.
With Love,
